Tips on How to Fix Roof Leaks…?

Do Not Delay:

You may feel tempted to ignore a small leak or delay it until next year’s roof replacement project. However, even a small leak can lead to bigger damage very quickly. The moisture could end up ruining the insulation, the ceiling and the framing. So the best time to fix a leaky roof is the moment when you notice a roof leak.

Look for Stains:

In order to repair a roof leak you first need to find it. Start by looking at the roof ceilings for sign of stains. If you have an attic, go up there and find the leak using the search/flash light. If you notice any water stains, mold, or black marks then these are the signs of a probable roof leak.

Locate the roof leak:

Finding roof leak in a flat roof is relatively easy as the roof leak may be somewhere near where water is pooling in. Finding a roof leak in an angled or pitched roof is difficult as water might seep down the inside of the angled roof before it drips, pools, and then drips down again into a room.

Get an Assistant:

If you are up on the roof all day but still didn’t find the culprit e.g. roof leak, then it’s time to hire a helper, someone who is trained to identify roof leaks. Having a helper is also necessary when the roof is pitched and difficult to walk on.

Determine what you need

A roof leak can be anywhere. It can be caused by a bad flashing, a small hole somewhere or even a broken shingle. Depending upon what is causing the roof leak you will need different materials.

Replace Damaged or Missing Shingles:

A roof covered with shingles looks very classy and beautiful. However, if you see a damaged or broken shingle than its time to replace them as rotten, cracked, or missing shingles are the most common cause of roof leaks.

Fix the Roof Flashing:

Flashings are a common cause of roof leaks. They should be inspected for any damage, holes or areas where water could get through and any needed repairs should be done quickly. If you see any leaks around the roof flashing you need to caulk the seals with a caulk gun filled with cement or something alike.

Seal Old Mounting Holes:

Some tiny holes or old holes that are left behind need to be sealed. Water can seep into these holes into the inner structure of the roof causing considerable damage without being un-noticed. You can easily patch these holes up using a bead of caulk or cement whichever is more appropriate to secure the hole.

Clean and Fix Your Gutters:

You also need to clean the roof from dirt, debris or any other loose material as these things can clog you roof gutters. You should also trim the overhanging roof branches so that your roof is frees of leaves and other debris.

Inspect Roof Dormers:

Dormer walls can provide plenty of spots where water can trickle down and enter the roof. The caulking may be old, cracked or even missing between the corner boards and between the siding and window edging.Water leaks into these cracks and works its way behind the flashing and into the house.

Repair the roof leaks:

Once you have identified the roof leaks and have all the materials needed then it’s time to perform roof repairs. As you will be working on the outside make sure you choose a day which is clear and not gloomy. Also if you are working with some dangerous chemicals and stuff, make sure you take all the necessary precautions.
