EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) has proven excellent
durability in all climates. However, a time comes when even most durable
roofing material will become damaged. The most common form of damage is either
water or because the membrane was not cleaned properly. However, whenever the
repair is needed, you can easily repair it using EPDM Coatings following the
guided procedure.
Plan it out
EPDM requires a temperature around 55 degrees to cure
properly so you will have to plan your installation accordingly and certainly
not on a rainy day. While it is waterproof the instant it is applied, rain can
make it appear spotted if it hasn’t had time to cure. It will take around
nine days for EPDM to cure if applied in cold weather.
Get the surface ready
Before the application of EPDM, you need to have the roof
areas thoroughly caulked and properly cleaned. Use non-silicone caulk to fill
any holes or gaps. After that clean the roof using power wash with mild soap or
detergent so that any mold, mildew or growing fungi are removed. After wash,
let the roof to dry out completely.
Application
For application, you will need nap rollers and paint
brushes. Nap rollers will help to achieve a smooth finish and paint brushes
will work on those uneven areas where nap rollers won’t work. The ideal goal is
to apply a single coat that is around 20 mil thick, which generally equals one
gallon to around 40 square feet on a smooth surface. For a proper repair make
sure all the area is properly covered with appropriate thickness. If it’s too
thin, it will crack, and if it is too thick, it will lead to bubbling or
excessive swelling. If you followed these steps correctly, your application
will just need to cure, and the process will be complete.
